Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
