Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
