He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and this week research predicted his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections.
