Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
